So, you just installed new countertops and are curious about how you can keep them looking amazing for years on end. Well, no matter what type of stone your countertops are, there are certain things you can do and incorporate in your daily and weekly cleaning routines to keep them looking shiny, clean, and brand new for years without any repairs or replacements.

The first thing that plays a huge part in your countertops looking great and lasting longer is the initial installation. You want to make sure you’re working with a certified fabricator who knows how to properly install your stone countertops. If they are installed wrong, you may come across cracks, chips, or imperfections in the security of your stone that can cause the life of your countertops to be decreased.

Research before you buy your stone. Make sure you are familiar with all the different kinds of stone available and the benefits to each one. It is also good to look at the disadvantages of your stone to avoid any surprises after install. You can also know which stone is best for you and your home based on your needs and wants, so line up the pros and cons of each stone and decide what is best for you.

Another thing is to make sure of is that you are buying stone from a reputable supplier. This will ensure that your stone is properly quarried and taken care of to avoid any issues after it is installed.

As far as what you can do after the stone is installed and taking care of it, there is a variety of things you can do to help prolong the life of your stone.

Cleaning

When it comes to cleaning your stone, you can use any stone cleaner on the market. There are particular cleaners that are less harsh in chemicals that are great for most stones. If you use a cleaner that isn’t made for stone, you can damage the surface with the chemicals. You can also use warm water and mild soap once a day to clean the surface of your counters.

Use Cutting Boards and Potholder

Most stones are resistant to scratching and heat, however it’s always good to act as if they aren’t resistant to these things. Always use a cutting board when cutting with knives and use pot holders under hot dishes and pots. This will not only keep your surface looking brand new, but it will help keep the surface strong.

Wipe Up Spills

Because some stones are porous, you want to wipe up spills as soon as they happen to avoid any stains. Making sure your stone is sealed and is resealed every so often will also help avoid staining of your stone.

Spot Treat

If you do have spills that occur, and you don’t notice them, make sure to spot treat them as soon as possible to avoid permanent staining. A lot of stains can be removed with certain products that are specific to the type of stone you have. If you do have stains, do some research and you can find a product that will help you remove the stain.
